Throughout history colour has been used to enhance the quality of architecture and interior design. The Greeks coloured their temples with ceramics using blue, gold and ochre. Their interiors were brightly decorated with colourful frescoes of a secular nature.

The Romans adopted the Greeks' use of colour externally and internally. Bronze, marble and brightly coloured intricately arranged mosaics were used on floors and walls and trompe de l’oeil wall paintings as decorative features contrary to the belief of many decorators who regard this as a contemporary decorative innovation.

Window selection criteria is critical to spatial air quality, ventilation, cooling,
heating, privacy, and security. Window treatments contribute to the visual
enhancement of the exterior and interior of a home.

The well-being of our home interior environment and occupants depends on
the orientation and selection of windows and treatments. Knowing what to
select and why will result in an environmentally sustainable, comfortable
home.

Floors define interior spaces, but unlike walls and ceilings are walked on. More so than any other surface in the home, floors must bear the burden of constant abuse from floor traffic, dirt, sand, animals, workmen and cleaning.

Floors can be hard, soft, cool, warm, highly polished, or textured. They define areas of traffic flow, changes in levels throughout the building and maybe a feature or completely subordinate in overall design contribution.

Accessories are a collection of precious or semi-precious artworks and lifetime collectibles reflecting our personalities creating a sense of belonging giving our homes individuality. Throughout our lives we collect items that give us pleasure for their visual appeal, sentimentality, or monetary value but whatever our passion and reasons, accessories should be selected based on what makes us happy and not what is currently trendy as these items date in time.

Within a matter of years, mass produced accessories may be the subject of a collection of unwanted trash and the next garage sale.

Good interior decor and design is useful, spatially, and visually harmonious with the architecture and natural surroundings and should be the direct result of the occupiers’ physical and emotional needs.

Develop and present an interior decor proposal including materials, colour, soft furnishing, and accessories recommendations for a bedroom, living and dining room. Students shall be supplied with a floor plan for reference. Décor recommendations shall be submitted
for assessment via email, posted or delivered to the School of Interior Décor and Design.

This unit shall be submitted as the final major assessment.
